Alabama football is losing former five-star running back Camar Wheaton, who is no longer with the team but not yet in the transfer portal.

Five-star running back Camar Wheaton was meant to be the next big thing for Alabama football.

He might still be a hit in college football, but it doesn’t look like it’ll be with the Crimson Tide.

The talented running back from the class of 2021 is no longer with Alabama, according to a report from Chris Hummer of 247Sports.

Camar Wheaton is unlikely to return to Alabama football

Hummers’ sources claim that Wheaton is not in Alabama’s student directory and he “has been away from the team.” That was backed up by other reporting from Rivals and elsewhere.

Even though he’s not present, he’s also not in the transfer portal. Alabama fans shouldn’t get their hopes up on that though.

“A source indicated to 247Sports that Wheaton is unlikely to return to Alabama,” Hummer wrote.

Wheaton was the No. 3 running back prospect in the class of 2021, per the 247Sports composite, as a prototypical north-south runner with speed and athleticism to break away from defenses.

Unfortunately, he spent much of the 2021 season sidelined by a knee injury.

It’s not clear why Wheaton’s exit from Alabama seems so certain but he’d have no shortage of suitors if or when he does land in the transfer portal.

As a recruit, Wheaton chose Alabama over Oklahoma, so the Sooners would be an obvious choice now. Running backs coach Demarco Murray was his primary recruiter and he was retained by new head coach Brent Venables.

The Crimson Tide will have to move on without starter Brian Robinson, who left for the NFL, but they return Trey Sanders and added Jahmyr Gibbs from Georgia Tech. They also have two highly-touted running backs coming in with the class of 2022.
