UPDATE: The New York Giants are zeroing in on Brian Daboll as their next head coach.
Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will almost certainly be the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins or the New York Giants.
Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is reportedly a finalist to be either the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins or the New York Giants.
It took a minute, but it seems as though Daboll will finally get to lead his own NFL team. With Buffalo losing in overtime in the AFC Divisional Round, it has fast-tracked his ability towards getting a main job. However, a series of decisions have to be made by the Giants and the Dolphins before the NFL world knows what team the Bills offensive coordinator will be leading next fall.
Here is what stands in the way of Daboll being named the next head coach at either spot.
Bills OC Brian Daboll will likely be either next Dolphins or next Giants HC
In New York, Daboll is seen as one of two finalists for the job, along with former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, who is from the area. As for the Dolphins, Daboll is viewed as of three finalists for the gig, along with Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, who is still coaching in the NFL playoffs right now.
And that right there is where things get complicated. If the Giants decide Daboll is the guy over Flores, it puts immense pressure on Miami to cancel McDaniel’s second interview with the team, especially if the 49ers win the NFC and reach Super Bowl 56. That means two more weeks of not being able to name a head coach. Miami may love McDaniel, but they could miss out on Daboll.
If Daboll gets offered the Giants job, but wants to wait and see what Miami’s plans are, New York may just go with Flores. Then again, Daboll used to work alongside new Giants general manager Joe Schoen in Orchard Park for years, so the connection there is obvious. Daboll’s interest in Miami has much to do with the opportunity to coach Tua Tagovailoa again. They were stars at Alabama.
This is a developing coaching situation to pay very close attention to in the next 72 hours or so.
