Giants: Brian Daboll’s track record puts pressure squarely on Daniel Jones
By Scott Rogust
With the New York Giants naming Brian Daboll as their next head coach, it is up to Daniel Jones to progress in his fourth season.
The New York Giants found their new general manager in Joe Schoen, the assistant general manager of the Buffalo Bills. Now, it is a full Bills take over in East Rutherford, N.J., as the Giants officially hired Buffalo offensive coordinator Brian Daboll as their next head coach. Fox Sports insider Jay Glazer was the first to break the news of Daboll and the Giants closing in on a deal.
Given Daboll’s track record with quarterbacks, especially with Josh Allen, it is all on Daniel Jones to finally turn things around in his fourth season.

The main takeaway from that press conference was that New York was going full steam ahead with Jones as the starting quarterback in 2022. Team co-owner John Mara honestly said that the Giants have “done everything possible to screw this kid up.” The organization took a huge step forward in helping Jones by hiring Daboll as their next bench boss.
Daboll is best known for his work with Allen. The former Wyoming quarterback was seen as a developmental project, but had the tools to be successful at the NFL. Last year, Allen played at an MVP level to help lead the Bills to the AFC Championship Game. This year, he propelled into superstardom with his late-game heroics in Buffalo’s Divisional Round matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Allen is not the only notable quarterback Daboll has worked with. In 2017, he was the offensive coordinator for Alabama, where he worked with freshman Tua Tagovailoa. Prior to his hip injury, Tagovailoa looked like the next great quarterback.
The hiring of Daboll is not going to turn Jones into Allen, but he is going to scheme things up to get the most out of the former 2019 sixth-overall pick. Jones showed flashes of being a good-to-great quarterback during his rookie season, but his turnover issues were glaring. In the past two seasons, Jones threw 21 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in addition to fumbling the ball 17 times.
There are a lot of factors that are not working in Jones’ favor. From a horrendous offensive line to a wide receiver corps that was plagued with injuries (especially this season) and constant turnover of offensive coordinators. But some of Jones’ struggles are on him, as he has the tendency to hold onto the football and has the inability to sense oncoming pressure.
The Giants have shown that they have focused on making life easier for Jones, given the hiring of Schoen as general manager and Daboll as head coach. Now, it is up to him to finally put the pieces together and prove that he can be the Giants quarterback for the foreseeable future. If not, the Giants will look elsewhere in 2023.
