Luke Getsy leaving Packers for Bears is a sign Aaron Rodgers may be leaving too
By John Buhler
If Luke Getsy is hired as the next offensive coordinator of the Chicago Bears, then that is terrible news for the Green Bay Packers’ chances of keeping Aaron Rodgers around.
First order of business for new Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus is to hit the Green Bay Packers where it hurts by trying to pry their quarterbacks coach/passing game coordinator Luke Getsy away from Aaron Rodgers.
Green Bay already lost its former offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett to the Denver Broncos job. Getsy interviewed for the job in Denver that ultimately went to his former colleague Hackett. With Rodgers on the fence about returning to the Packers anyway, retirement or not, if they lose Getsy to a division rival in the same week they lose Hackett to Denver, then Rodgers is so leaving.
The Packers may still have Matt LaFleur as head coach, but losing Rodgers’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach feels like too much to overcome.
Luke Getsy to the Chicago Bears sounds like Aaron Rodgers is leaving Green Bay
Look. If the Bears’ gig is Getsy’s if he wants it, then either he gets promoted by the Packers to offensive coordinator or he is walking. The allure of getting a promotion and working alongside a promising up-and-coming quarterback in Justin Fields is very appealing. Then again, so is competing for Super Bowls with Rodgers. Getsy’s choice might change the course of history.
If he stays and Rodgers comes back, Green Bay has a shot to win Lombardi Trophy No. 5 before the soon-to-be four-time NFL MVP retires. Should he go to the Bears, then Rodgers has all the more reason to request a trade out of town to a place like Denver. If the Packers cannot put forth a competitive package to keep Getsy from going to a rival, then Green Bay will reap what it sewed.
If the Bears do end up getting Getsy, then the Packers will get got and lose Rodgers in the process.
