How many teams have played a Super Bowl at home in NFL history?
The Los Angeles Rams could make NFL history if they make Super Bowl LVI, which will be hosted at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
The Super Bowl is in its 56th year, yet the opportunity to play — and win — at home is something that has only been achieved once before.
In 2020, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the first team in NFL history to perform in the Super Bowl at their home stadium. On Feb. 7, 2021, the Buccaneers bested the opposing Kansas City Chiefs 31-9, which then made the Buccaneers the first team to ever win the Super Bowl on their home turf.
One year later, the Los Angeles Rams could have the chance to repeat history. The Rams, who are set to play the San Francisco 49ers in the 2022 NFC Conference Championship game, will advance to Super Bowl LVI if they defeat the 49ers. If so, they will become the second team to ever accomplish this feat, and they could become the second to ever win at home.
The Los Angeles Rams could become the 2nd NFL team to host a Super Bowl
What makes the Buccaneers’ feat and the Rams’ potential accomplishment so impressive is that these opportunities challenge a long-held “Super Bowl Curse.” Somehow, before the 2020s, every team who could have played at home in the Super Bowl happened to miss out at some point during the season.
The Minnesota Vikings could have played at home in the Super Bowl in the 2017 season, but the Vikings lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Conference Championship.
Both the Rams and 49ers have come close to hosting a home Super Bowl in the past.
According to NBC Sports, “the Los Angeles Rams–who played home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum at the time–played at the Rose Bowl in Super Bowl XIV (1980). A few years later, The San Francisco 49ers played at Stanford Stadium in Super Bowl XIX (1985), but their home games were at Candlestick Park.”
This will be the first Super Bowl hosted at SoFi Stadium, which is also set to host the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.
