Jaguars incompetence led to blowing chance to interview hot-shot head coach candidate
By John Buhler
By not requesting an interview during the initial interviewing period, the Jacksonville Jaguars are unable to speak with Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell at this time.
The Jacksonville Jaguars continue to botch their head-coaching search, despite having had a leg up on every other team in the NFL but the Las Vegas Raiders.
Jacksonville should have hired their former starting quarterback and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Byron Leftwich by now, but for some reason, owner Shahid Khan is hitching his wagon to Trent Baalke as his general manager. Leftwich would have presumably put pen to paper if he was allowed to work Arizona Cardinals front office executive Adrian Wilson as his general manager.
Now, the Jaguars cannot even interview Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell because they did not request an interview during the initial interviewing period. O’Connell and the Rams are playing at home in Super Bowl 56 vs. the Cincinnati Bengals in two weeks.
Jacksonville Jaguars screw up interviewing process with hot coaching candidate
This should not be this hard. Jacksonville plays in a very winnable division with a promising franchise quarterback in Trevor Lawrence at the helm. The city is in a state with no income tax and the Jaguars are loaded with draft capital because they have been so terrible for so long. Yet, here we are. O’Connell may not be their savior, but how do the Jaguars fail to get this interview set up?
These head-coaching vacancies are quickly filling up. As of Monday, four of the nine teams with openings have found their guy. Now that the Silver and Black have found their next face of the franchise in Josh McDaniels, London’s Finest have been on the clock looking for their next head coach the longest. This would not be the case if Urban Meyer was never hired to even begin with.
The Jaguars may have to wait even longer to hire their next head coach if O’Connell is their guy.
