FormerĀ OklahomaĀ quarterbackĀ Caleb WilliamsĀ makes it official by transferring to USC where heāll play for former Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley with the Trojans.
As a surprise to absolutely no one, Caleb Williams follows his former Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley to Los Angeles to become a USC Trojan.
Williams was the Soonersā starting quarterback in the second half of the year once pre-season Heisman Trophy favorite Spencer Rattler played rather poorly. After coming up short in Bedlam, Riley shockingly left Norman for Los Angeles, leaving many questioning if the former five-star quarterback from Washington, D.C. would follow him to Southern California. It did feel inevitable.
With Williams entering the portal after the Sooners won the Alamo Bowl over Oregon shortly after former Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables was hired as Rileyās successor, USC made all the sense in the world. After top recruit Malachi Nelson flipped his commitment from Oklahoma to USC, it became obvious. With Jaxson Dart then entering the portal, it was only a matter of time.
And here is the tweet that let everybody know Williams was indeed heading to USC.
Caleb Williams officially announces his decision to transfer to USC
Though Williams could have stayed in Norman to play for Venables in Jeff Lebbyās offense, the allure of following Riley to Los Angeles was too good to pass up. USC should be a year away from contending in the Pac-12 South. The reigning Pac-12 South champion Utah Utes should be the favorites to repeat, possibly making their first trip into the College Football Playoff in team history.
Since Williams will only be a true sophomore in 2022, him following Riley to Los Angeles could align with USCās coronation as the West Coastās best in 2023. He would be a true junior and a contender for the Heisman Trophy. Year two is usually when a blue-blood program pops when the right head coach is in charge. This is exactly what USC fans are hoping for with Riley and Williams.
For the first time since the Pete Carroll era, USC feels like college program worth getting behind.
