Top 3 uncommitted recruits Brian Kelly should target to commit to LSU
By John Buhler
Jacoby Mathews is either going to play for LSU or suit up for an SEC rival
It looks to be a two or even a three-team race for Jacoby Mathews‘ four-star commitment. The standout safety from Ponchatoula is a former LSU commit, but decommitted from the program last summer. The No. 38 overall prospect in 2022 is the No. 2 safety in the country, as well as the No. 3 player from Louisiana. He has 31 offers, but it comes down to Florida, LSU and Texas A&M.
Florida may be a distant third, but Texas A&M is a very real possibility for him. Mathews has gotten an in-home visit from Aggies head coach Jimbo Fisher recently. Though Kelly may have had to quickly build up a rapport with Mathews, he maintained the same primary recruiter throughout in Wilson. The question is if new safeties coach Kerry Cooks can sell him on the new wave of DB U.
Obviously, Florida getting Corey Raymond gives the Gators a potential shot at landing Mathews. However, it might be too little, too late for the Gators to poach a top-flight talent of Mathews’ caliber out of their cross-divisional rival’s state. Though it could go either way with Mathews, it would serve Kelly to use every last resource to keep him from going to Texas A&M or Florida.
The Aggies might have the slight edge now, but LSU is far more likely to get him than does Florida.
