It would be a tough pill to swallow for the Chiefs if the Chargers were the ones that were able to add Tyrann Mathieu in free agency. Kansas City losing the All-Pro safety to a division rival would be a nightmare scenario and would make LA quite impressive in their secondary.

With that said, having a rookie quarterback — particularly one of Justin Herbert’s caliber — is the time when a franchise should make aggressive moves in free agency to build a complete roster. Boasting a sizeable $57 million in cap space, the Bolts are in the position where they can do exactly that this offseason.

The Chargers run defense is the biggest issue on that side of the ball but, even then, that shouldn’t preclude them from giving a long look at Mathieu. Derwin James’ healthy has been an issue, which would make Mathieu valuable. But if James stays on the field, that safety tandem would be unquestionably elite.

Now, LA in being aggressive can’t overpay a veteran like Mathieu just so they can try and stick it to the Chiefs. However, this should be considered a real possibility and it would be high entertainment to see the safety stay in the AFC West and get to play the Chiefs twice per year.
