Michigan football: Favorite to replace Josh Gattis
By John Buhler
With Josh Gattis leaving the Michigan football program for Miami, Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh could look at quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss as a candidate to promote from within.
Now that Josh Gattis has left the Michigan football program in the dust to join Mario Cristobal’s Miami Hurricanes staff, Jim Harbaugh may look to promote Matt Weiss from within to be the Wolverines’ next offensive coordinator.
While there are several candidates to promote from within, Weiss is the one Bruce Feldman of The Athletic has honed in on. Weiss is in his second season at Michigan after serving for Harbaugh’s older brother John on the Baltimore Ravens staff for years. The former Vanderbilt punter has coached on both sides of the ball and most recently served as Michigan’s quarterbacks coach.
Gattis is the second coordinator to leave the Michigan program this year with defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald returning to Baltimore to replace Don “Wink” Martindale.
Michigan football may replace Josh Gattis with Matt Weiss as its next OC
This has been a tumultuous offseason for the Michigan program, and it is all Harbaugh’s fault. The Wolverines are coming off their best season in decades, yet Harbaugh left his fellow coaches hanging on National Signing Day to go interview with the Minnesota Vikings. This was a major red flag, and probably contributed to Gattis leaving for Miami as soon as Cristobal offered him the job.
Had Harbaugh been hired by Minnesota, Gattis may have been a candidate to replace him internally, along with running backs coach and former Michigan star Mike Hart. Though it might make sense to promote Weiss from within for the sake of offensive continuity, Michigan has crushed all momentum it had coming out of the College Football Playoff for Harbaugh being a flirt.
If Weiss can get even more out of starting quarterback Cade McNamara, then maybe this is logical move for Michigan to make here.
