30 greatest players to never win a Super Bowl
15. Warren Moon, QB, Houston Oilers
It’s unfortunate that we are not discussing professional football championships and not just Super Bowl rings. For all the wrong reasons, University of Washington quarterback Warren Moon would begin his career as a paid signal-caller in the Canadian Football League. The team was the Edmonton Eskimos and the strong-armed pro would lead that franchise to five consecutive titles. Few threw a football as well as Moon, who was thought by some capable of playing quarterback in the NFL based on ignorance alone.
But the strong-armed quarterback would finally make his way to the NFL in 1984 after all those years in the CFL. And in 10 seasons with the Houston Oilers, he put up phenomenal numbers in those “Run and Shoot” attacks. But despite numerous postseason appearances, the team could not get over the hump. There would also be stints with the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs. But none of those club would reach a conference title game much less a Super Bowl with Moon.
The NFL numbers alone remain impressive. His 49,325 passing yards still ranks ninth in league history. And only 12 players have more TD throws (291) than the Pro Football Hall of Famer, who got the call from Canton in 2006. Fortunately for Moon, there are those five CFL championships, proving he could play the position no matter where and regardless of the circumstances.
