13. John Hannah, OG, New England Patriots

He is not only one of the great players at his position ever, he may also own one of the game’s better nicknames.

Before the days of the Washington Redskins’ superior offensive lines of the 1980s and early ‘90s that were dubbed “The Hogs,” there was John “Hog” Hannah of the New England Patriots. The franchise made him the fourth overall pick in the 1973 NFL Draft and he rewarded the franchise with 13 stellar campaigns.

Nine of the years were rewarded with a Pro Bowl invitation while the former University of Alabama product was a seven-time All-Pro. Hannah played on his share of poor Patriots’ teams but the franchise did reach the playoffs four times during his tenure. During his final NFL season, New England became the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive road postseason games in the same year. It put the Pats in Super Bowl XX in New Orleans. Unfortunately, five John Hannah’s wouldn’t have stood much of a chance against the 1985 Super Bowl shuffling defense of the Chicago Bears.

Hannah, a massive 6-foot-2, 265-pound plow horse who mowed down would-be tacklers with ease at times, was a forced when it came to the Patriots’ ground game while also excelling at pass protection. It’s safe to say that he is certainly in the discussion when it comes to the greatest guards in the history of this league. Unfortunately, more times than not, the rest of the team just wasn’t quite as talented.
