30 greatest players to never win a Super Bowl
27. Aeneas Williams, CB, Phoenix Cardinals/St. Louis Rams
The numbers are indeed impressive for the versatile defensive back and a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2014. Aeneas Williams began his NFL career at cornerback and ended it at safety. It would span 14 seasons and two franchises.
The former Southern University product was a third-round draft choice by the then-Phoenix Cardinals in 1991 and he would spend 10 seasons in the desert with a franchise that struggled throughout his tenure with the team. But his outstanding play was hard to ignore as Williams picked off 46 passes and returned six of those thefts for touchdowns. There were also 14 fumble recoveries for the opportunistic defender and he took back two of those opponent miscues for scores. Williams was named to six Pro Bowls in his 10 seasons with the Cards.
Things would dramatically change for the talented pro. In 2001, he was traded to the then-St. Louis Rams. At the time, the Cardinals were a member of the NFC East and not the NFC West. In any case, Williams was off to another franchise and one that had won a Super Bowl title in 1999. The ball-hawking performer had played in only two playoff games in 1998 before joining the Rams, who were favored to knock off the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI. But we all know how that turned out.
Williams would play three more seasons with the club and would finish his NFL career with 55 interceptions (20th in NFL history). But he also finished without that elusive championship.
