The New York Knicks have one era of greatness, which is a major rarity for a New York team. They’ve won just two NBA Championships. and they both came in the time Walt Frazier was the man in the backcourt. Walt Frazier spent 10 seasons with the New York Knicks, winning those two championships.

The Knicks drafted Frazier out of SIU, just a few months after he won the NIT Tournament in Madison Square Garden. In his rookie season, he got the nickname Clyde because he wore a fedora that reminded people of the character in the movie “Bonnie and Clyde”. He got better in his sophomore season, almost doubling his points to 17.5 a game. He became a superstar in year three, and that led to the Knicks’ first championship.

Frazier made his first All-Star Game in 1970. It was his first of seven selections during his Knicks career. That season is known as the year Willis Reed came back on the court on one leg in the NBA Finals. We all know the moment, but Reed only ended up scoring two points before going off again. What really happened was Frazier dominated the rest of the series with Reed out, and he helped win the Knicks their first championship.

The Knicks would make the NBA Finals in 1972 and 1973, winning the latter. It still stands as the only two NBA Championships in the history of the Knicks. Frazier left the Knicks owning most of the team’s franchise records. Patrick Ewing has broken a lot of those records, but Frazier is still one of the best players to ever grace Madison Square Garden.
