Phoenix Suns — Steve Nash

1996–1998, 2004-2011
14.4 points per game
9.4 assists per game
3.1 rebounds per game

Steve Nash going to the Phoenix Suns is one of the greatest moves in the history of the league. He led the Suns’ “seven seconds or less” offense. Nash actually started his career with the Suns when they selected him in the first round of the 1996 NBA Draft. They took him 15th overall and barely played him in his first season. In his second season, he became a good three-point shooter. The Suns traded him after two seasons of underutilization, and he spent the next six seasons in Dallas.

Nash was signed to the Suns on a six-year deal worth $63 million total. The Mavs didn’t want to go past the four-year, $36 million deal they originally offered. Nash went for the bigger money, and he joined a Mike Dantoni offense that needed Nash. He was the small, athletic guard who was perfect. He ended up taking a team that wasn’t supposed to be good to a 62-win record. Only three teams have had a better turnaround in NBA history.

Nash became the first Canadian player to win the NBA MVP that season, causing the Mavericks to immediately regret their blunder. He ended up winning the MVP again in 2006, but both years the Suns lost in the Western Conference Finals.

Nash was incredibly efficient, which is why the Mike Dantoni offense worked. He made the 50-40-90 club four times. He also led the league in assists five times. Nash was one of the best players in the league in Phoenix. Who knows if he ever hits those heights in Dallas. Was this a player coming into his own at 30, or was it Nash getting to the right place at the right time? No matter what, there is no Suns point guard who comes close to Nash.
