Dodgers: Latest on Dave Roberts’ pending extension talks

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has no worries he will remain with the club past the 2022 season.

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke with The Athletic’s Andy McCullough about the offseason and a potential contract extension with the club that would keep him in Dodger blue past his current contract’s expiration at the end of the 2022 season.

Roberts has no worries, per McCullough’s reporting, “It’ll get done. … It’ll get done.”

Roberts, who will be 50 in May, has a record of 542-329 with the Dodgers. The skipper’s .622 regular-season winning percentage is the best in MLB history. In his six seasons with the Dodgers, the club has not missed the postseason – playing in three World Series and winning one during the 2020 season. The club had a record of 106-56 in 2021, surprisingly finishing in second place for the first time in his tenure with the Dodgers. The San Francisco Giants won the division but fell to the Dodgers, who played the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS. The Dodgers lost to the Braves in the NLCS in 2021.

Dodgers: Does Dave Roberts have any reason to worry?

Only Joe Torre, Bobby Cox, and Tony La Russa have won more playoff games than Roberts. That’s not bad at all.

Roberts and Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, according to McCullough, have indicated they will negotiate a contract extension in the coming weeks. The two were very complimentary of one another with Friedman telling McCullough he looked forward to Roberts being a part of future successes for the Dodgers. Roberts believes Friedman has the best mind in baseball.

Once the MLB lockout ends and Roberts’ extension is finalized, the Dodgers will have some work to do regarding their roster. Max Scherzer is now with the New York Mets. Corey Seager has moved on to the Texas Rangers. Long-time club pillars Clayton Kershaw and Kenley Jansen are free agents. Trevor Bauer’s status with the club and the MLB is unknown.

As is the case with many teams, the Dodgers look to be very active once the MLB lockout is resolved. It will help to have their manager locked up for a few years to come.
