10 worst quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl
By Randy Gurzi
2. Doug Williams
Williams should always be remembered for breaking down one of the biggest barriers in professional football. After being a first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Williams bounced around the football world before landing with the Washington Redskins in 1986.
After replacing ineffective starter Jay Schroeder, Williams led the Redskins to their second Super Bowl title, beating the Denver Broncos in a 42-10 shelling. In the process, Williams became the first black quarterback to start in a Super Bowl, let alone win one.
For his nine-year career between Tampa Bay and Washington, Williams completed 49.5 percent of his throws to accompany 100 touchdown passes and 93 interceptions. While it’s true that his numbers were generated in a different era, Williams was still largely a mediocre quarterback in his time.
All that said, Williams leaves a lasting mark on the game of pro football due to his achievements, knocking down doors for men like Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson, black quarterbacks who would also reach the ultimate game.
