5 best Amari Cooper landing spots if Cowboys release WR
4. Kansas City Chiefs
Three months ago, this would have made so much more sense than it does now. The Chiefs were flailing on both sides of the ball, and the usually self-assured Mahomes was struggling under the weight of defenses adjusting to the Chiefs style of play. The two star receiving threats, Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, were struggling too. The Chiefs needed more playmakers.
Over the last stretch of the season, the likes of Byron Pringle, Mecole Hardman, and Darrel Williams came to life and the Chiefs offense looked more like it’s usual self. However, Kansas City probably needs more depth at receiver in the long run. Adding Cooper, of course, isn’t a depth-based move, but it gives Patrick Mahomes another elite weapon to work with.
It takes a significant load off Hill and Kelce while adding a receiver who can work at all three levels. Hill’s average depth of target dropped to just 10.6 yards, per PFF. His lowest ADOT since his rookie season. He was asked to work underneath more as defenses took away the threat of the Chiefs going deep by blitzing less, dropping more players into coverage, and playing more two-high safety looks.
A very good Chiefs offense would get even better with Cooper on the outside, and it might just give Hill the freedom to operate more like himself. For Cooper, it’s also one of the best opportunities around to make a deep playoff run. Having Mahomes throwing you the ball every week? Who could say no?
