Chiefs: Travis Kelce won’t ever get over Super Bowl loss
Despite being a Super Bowl LIV champion, Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce admits that losing in Super Bowl is something he won’t get over.
As life-changing as it is to win a Super Bowl, it is equally life-changing to lose one. Prominent teams that rise all the way up to the championship game and lose often fall apart in the resulting seasons.
It’s virtually a given, hence the ubiquitous term, getting a “Super Bowl hangover.”
The Buffalo Bills are undefeated at getting back to the big game — they went to, and lost, four successive Super Bowls from 1991-1994 — the Los Angeles Rams have also had a remarkable journey back to the big game. Two Super Bowls in five years is indicative of a franchise that was able to bounce back from the monumental loss. Even though the Kansas City Chiefs made it back-to-back in early 2020 and 2021, their Super Bowl LV loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers still stings for Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
“Getting there and losing it the way we did, that’s gonna sting for the rest of my life,” Kelce said.
Travis Kelce: Super Bowl loss is “gonna sting for the rest of my life”
Before their Super Bowl loss last year and difficult 2021 season, the Chiefs were believed to be the Super Bowl favorites at Super Bowl LVI. To their credit, the Chiefs found ways to win with a powerhouse offense and improved defense, ending the 2021 season 12-5 and clinching the AFC West for the sixth year in a row.
Although that one loss last year might sting, it’s not unreasonable to imagine Kelce and the Chiefs will be back soon. Kelce is signed on for four more years with the Chiefs, giving Kelce and his teammates a few more tries to make the stinging hurt a little less.
