Rams: Could Sean McVay actually retire after the Super Bowl?
By Mark Powell
Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay doesn’t think he’ll make it to age 60 as a head coach. The 36-year-old wants to focus on his family, at some point.
McVay is coaching his second Super Bowl at just 36 years of age, a remarkable accomplishment for a man many thought was in over his head when the Rams hired him in 2017.
Yet, McVay has exceeded those expectations. He took the Rams to Super Bowl LIII, an eventual loss to the New England Patriots, and vowed to get better in basically every department. He’s done just that, adding elite playmakers like Jalen Ramsey and Matthew Stafford. On paper, this Rams team is better than the one that lost to New England.
But despite all the progress, McVay isn’t as thrilled with his personal life. Being an NFL head coach takes sacrifice, and he’s not willing to throw away his family life for decades of professional football greatness. It’s tough to blame him.
Rams: Could Sean McVay leave this offseason?
"“I love this so much that it’s such a passion, but I also know that what I’ve seen from some of my closest friends, whether it’s coaches or even some of our players. I’m gonna be married this summer. I want to have a family, and I think being able to find that balance but also be able to give the time necessary,” McVay said. “I have always had a dream about being able to be a father, and I can’t predict the future, you know? I jokingly say that.”"
An ESPN report connecting McVay to NFL broadcasting gigs is only backed up by the above quote, which makes it seem like the Rams coach could step away for the time being.
If there were ever a moment to do so, it’s now while he’s still young and could potentially return in the future should he get the itch.
“I know I love football and I’m so invested in this thing and I’m in the moment right now. But at some point, too, if you said, ‘What do you want to be able to do?’ I want to be able to have a family, and I want to be able to spend time with them,” McVay said.
As shocking and honest as McVay is being, his takeaway from life as an NFL head coach is remarkably down to earth and refreshing. Should he take a brief leave, either heading into broadcasting or something else, he’ll go down as far more than just a flash in the pan.
