Liam Coen hails from the Sean McVay tree and is thriving coaching at Kentucky

If the Chiefs want to hire the next hot-shot offensive mind, they might need to look at what is good in SEC Country. One coach who might be exactly what the Chiefs are looking for is Kentucky Wildcats offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Liam Coen. Prior to arriving in Lexington last season, he served on Sean McVay’s Los Angeles Rams coaching staff from 2018 to 2020.

Coen has served as a quarterbacks coach at multiple levels, college and pro, as well as an assistant wide receivers coach for McVay. In his mid-30s, Coen helped give Mark Stoops’ Kentucky offense some much-needed flight last year. He was a huge reason why quarterback Will Levis thrived being thrust into the starting quarterback role. In a way, Coen would suffice the Kafka departure.

While Coen is certainly innovative, a trait that Reid tends to like in his offensive-minded coaches, bringing him into the fold does come at the price of continuity. He may be a McVay disciple, but he has never worked for Coach Reid before. Potentially losing two offensive coaches in Bieniemy and Kafka will be tough for the Chiefs, but it could serve as a means for Reid to slam the reset button.

Coen is on the path to being a head coach, but that could be fast tracked if he goes to Kansas City.
