3 Rams free agents who played their last down for Los Angeles
By John Buhler
Look for a few of Los Angeles Rams to play their last snap for them as Super Bowl champions.
While the 2021 Los Angeles Rams are Super Bowl 56 champions, not everyone from this team will be back next year.
Not including a handful of players who are riding off into the sunset as Super Bowl champions, the Rams will lose a key piece or two in free agency. This is because the other 31 teams will want some of that good stuff that led to the Rams being Super Bowl champions in the first place. Though the Rams will bring back some of these guys, other players were only short-term rentals.
Here are three impending free agents who played their last snap for the Rams in Los Angeles.
Los Angeles Rams: 3 free agents who are likely to be leaving this offseason
Sony Michel has not had anything close to the pro career people were expecting
Though Sony Michel is now a two-time Super Bowl champion, he has not had anything close to the pro career many people were expecting coming out of Georgia. He was part of the Dawgs’ first College Football Playoff team in 2017. Four years later, people will be shocked he has never had a 1,000-yard rushing season and went a few picks before his former college teammate Nick Chubb.
Michel may have been a big part of the Rams’ rushing attack this year, but he only averaged 4.1 yards per carry on 208 rushing attempts. He enters free agency at 27 years old. While Michel knows how to complement a championship-caliber team, he is likely never going to be a bell-cow for a contender going forward. Plus, the Rams already have Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson.
Does Michel have value in this league? Most definitely, but he is not going to be thrust into a position to be featured star at running back going forward. He may be destined to bounce around from team to team for the next few years before his career runs its course. Because someone will overpay to add his leadership and offensive versatility, the Rams are not that likely to retain him.
Michel could potentially end up in a spot where a team is looking to go from good to great in 2022.
