3. Top free agent targets for the New York Jets – G Brandon Scherff

One of the top priorities for Jets’ GM Joe Douglas since he arrived in 2019 has been to improve the offensive line. Douglas has done a good job investing resources in the unit in terms of top draft picks (Mekhi Becton and Alijah Vera-Tucker) and free agents (Connor McGovern and George Fant).

The unit as a whole is roughly league-average when everyone is healthy but the group still has a big hole at right guard. Greg Van Roten never panned out for the Jets while mid-season acquisition Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff helped, but his NFL future is unclear due to medical school commitments.

The top guard on the market is Scherff, who received the franchise tag from Washington last season. Scherff is a bit injury-prone, having missed six games in 2021 and a combined 24 over the past five years, but when he is on the field Scherff is one of the league’s best guards.

The Commanders are unlikely to re-sign the five-time Pro Bowler and the Jets should be all over a run at the 30-year old guard. Scherff would give the Jets an elite upgrade at the right guard spot while buying Douglas time to draft a long-term answer at the position.
