Cubs making the wrong choice with Willson Contreras
The Chicago Cubs very well could end up regretting not finalizing an extension with Willson Contreras before the MLB lockout got underway.
There’s been so much change for the Chicago Cubs over the past year, it’s almost hard to keep up with who’s still left in town. Out of the big bunch of fan favorites, Willson Contreras was one of only a few who stayed with the club and wasn’t traded.
With Chicago hanging on to the stud catcher and not sending him to a new team like Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, Anthony Rizzo and others, the expectation was that he’d be with the team for the long haul. Yet, no contract extension has been completed and trade rumors are continuing.
Cubs need to figure things out with Willson Contreras as soon as possible
According to Bleacher Nation, things are very much up in the air with Contreras, as Chicago hadn’t even made any efforts to get an extension completed with Contreras ahead of the lockout starting. That’s not great news if you’re a Cubs fan.
On top of that, the trade rumors indeed are flying. Assuming the lockout ends and we do get some baseball this spring/summer, Contreras will be taking the field without knowing what’s going to happen down the road. Leading up to the trade deadline – if no extension has been signed – more and more rumors are going to come up.
That’s not what Contreras or the Cubs need, especially if the team is in a position to make some noise in the division and then also in the playoffs. At just 29 years old, Contreras still has plenty of great baseball ahead of him. Will things continue with the Cubs? The Chicago supporters are hoping so, but the front office needs to pick up the pace a bit here when things open back up.
