Watch: Juwan Howard punch starts all-out brawl between Michigan, Wisconsin benches
By John Buhler
Michigan basketball coach Juwan Howard incited a benches-clearing brawl after punching a Wisconsin Badgers assistant on Greg Gard’s coaching staff.
Juwan Howard punched a Wisconsin assistant coach, igniting an ugly brawl in the aftermath of the Michigan Wolverines’ 77-63 loss to the Badgers in Madison on Sunday afternoon.
Howard and Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard were getting in each others’ grills after the second-half buzzer sounded. The Michigan head coach took exception to Gard using a timeout in a game the No. 15 Badgers were going to win easily. Though the players and and the assistants tried to separate the two, Howard took his fabulous five fingers to the face of a Wisconsin assistant.
Things got very nasty very quickly at the Kohl Center with players pushing and shoving each other.
Michigan basketball head coach Juwan Howard incites a benches-clearing brawl
It may not be going well for the Wolverines on the hardwood this season, but this is an incredibly ugly look for Howard. Violence is never the answer and with this being caught on-camera at the end of a Big Ten game, it will cost him games, and possibly his job at his alma mater. Howard is supposed to be a leader of young men and he set in motion the worst thing that could happen.
Though it was all tied up at 31 points heading into the halftime, the Badgers outscored the Wolverines 46-32 in the second half to win this one easily. No. 15 Wisconsin improved to 21-5 on the year, while Michigan stumbled to 14-11. While the Badgers are thinking about the NCAA Tournament, Michigan might have to think about getting a new head coach instead of the NIT.
What an unmitigated disaster that was on display for the whole world to see at the Kohl Center…
