5 targets for Broncos in 2022 NFL free agency
By John Buhler
The Denver Broncos need to play catch-up in free agency to stay afloat in the deep AFC West.
While the Denver Broncos certainly had their moments last season, they were a non-playoff team for the sixth year in a row.
The Broncos have been unable to get the quarterback right since Peyton Manning retired after Super Bowl 50. They also have had their issues at hiring the right head coach. With Nathaniel Hackett coming over from the Green Bay Packers, there is reason to believe he can bring some of that good fortune with him to the Rocky Mountains. That all starts by winning in NFL free agency.
With over $39 million in cap space, here is who the Broncos could be targeting this offseason.
Denver Broncos: 5 players to target in 2022 NFL free agency
Kevin King needs of a new start and the Rocky Mountain air may be refreshing
After spending his first five NFL seasons with the Green Bay Packers, cornerback Kevin King may need a new start to salvage his once-promising pro career. The former second-round pick out of Washington has largely been marginalized and scapegoated for all things bad in the Packers secondary. Still in his 20s, one could argue he would be served by leaving Green Bay behind.
The Broncos have a proud history of defensive excellence, especially in the secondary. He could follow Hackett to Denver and be a high-end nickel and dime defensive back for the Broncos on a second contract. Going up against Derek Carr, Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes six times annually in divisional play sounds tough, but it just might be the cure to get King out of his funk.
Ultimately, the Broncos could look at other defensive backs in free agency over King. He is not going to command the money of others on the open market. But from strictly a value standpoint and a previous working relationship with Hackett in Green Bay, one would be foolish to cross off King coming to Denver in its entirety. Former Packers will come, and King could be one of them.
The Broncos have plenty of cap space to take a flier on King in his free agency for a year or two.
