Aaron Rodgers’ decision may hinge on Davante Adams’ free agency
By John Buhler
What Aaron Rodgers decides to do may have everything to do with what comes next for Davante Adams.
Though Aaron Rodgers did not expound upon his NFL future on The Pat McAfee Show Tuesday afternoon, there is a chance he could be waiting to see what the future holds for his Green Bay Packers teammate Davante Adams.
Rodgers may still be under contract with the Packers, but Adams is hitting free agency. Not only that, but he is viewed as the best player hitting the open market this offseason, regardless of position group. Could the Packers use the franchise tag on Adams? Yes, but there is a chance he could be walking. Two teams who can land him are the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders.
If Rodgers plans to wait and see what happens with Adams in free agency before making his decision on 2022, he might be waiting for a while. Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports “there have been no discussions between the Packers and Adams since the season ended.” The Packers have until March 8 to decide whether to use the franchise tag or not.
Should Adams be tagged by Green Bay, does that suggest Rodgers will be coming back as well?
Aaron Rodgers could wait and see what happens with Davante Adams first
Had it not been for the late-night Instagram post of great gratitude after a deep, deep cleansing, this would have been the course of action many people would have expected Rodgers to take. Though not officially a package deal, it is hard to see Rodgers playing next year without Adams as his go-to No. 1 wide receiver. The question is if it would be with Green Bay, Denver or Las Vegas.
If the Packers use the franchise tag, then Rodgers must decide if he wants to keep playing with Adams because the wide receiver will be under contract with their same team. Green Bay has said it would be committed to using all of its financial resources to build a Super Bowl team around Rodgers. The only problem is the Packers cannot win a conference title bout for the life of them.
Denver is intriguing for two reasons. One, Adams is a West Coast guy, so playing a bit closer to home could be appealing for him. And most importantly, the Broncos hired former Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett as their next head coach. Together, Adams, Hackett and Rodgers have carved up the NFC for years. Perhaps they could do the same thing over in the AFC?
And for the Raiders, that would be all about Adams reuniting with his college teammate and close friend Derek Carr. This dynamic duo balled out together at Fresno State. The Silver and Black are in dire need of a No. 1 wide receiver. While Rodgers would have to be traded to Las Vegas, Carr and further draft capital could be coming Green Bay’s way as compensation. This one feels very messy.
If Rodgers wants to play the waiting game, let’s see what the Packers decide to do come March 8.
