Entering the 2022 league year, the Commanders have the ninth-most cap space in the NFL. Even though that is a good position to be in, Washington may need to free up some more money, especially if they want to re-sign Scherff.

If Washington wants to free up a good chunk of cap space, they can do so if they release defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis.

Washington’s starting defensive line is stacked with Chase Young, Jonathan Allen, Montez Sweat and Daron Payne. Ioannidis is currently slotted in as a backup on the defensive tackle depth chart.

This past season, Ioannidis started in six of 16 games, where he recorded 38 total tackles, 11 quarterback hits and 2.5 sacks. Overall in his six-year career, Ioannidis tallied 175 total tackles (25 for loss), 59 quarterback hits, 24.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.

Ioannidis has one more season remaining on his three-year, $21.8 million contract. The Commanders can free up $6.9 million off the cap if they are to release him at any point this offseason.
