2. Free agent targets for the Dallas Cowboys – Dalton Schultz

One of the most important free agents for Dallas is one of their own. Tight end Dalton Schultz has become a valuable player in the Cowboys’ offense for his ability to block and serve as a big presence in the middle of the field for Prescott.

An injury to Gallup and some down performances from Cooper created a bigger role for Schultz, who posted career-highs in several receiving categories last season. That production came at a good time for Schultz, who is set to test the free agent market as the top tight end on the board in a solid class at the position.

Given the questions that Dallas is facing with its wide receivers, keeping Schultz is a high priority. The drop-off from Schultz to either Blake Jarwin or a rookie is steep, something the Cowboys can’t afford if they are planning to make a run at the Super Bowl next season.

The good news is that Dallas can use the franchise tag on Schultz to ensure he stays with them next season. The salary cap math on that is a bit complicated but Jerry Jones will undoubtedly shuffle some money around if they decide that Schultz is an important priority.
