Sean McVay turned down massive Amazon offer to return to Rams
By Scott Rogust
Sean McVay revealed to ESPN that he would not be pursuing television opportunities and that he will remain head coach of the Los Angeles Rams.
It took five seasons for Sean McVay to lead the Los Angeles Rams to a Super Bowl championship as their head coach. In the process, he became the youngest head coach to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. Despite the win, there has been buzz about McVay possibly retiring to pursue a broadcasting role.
The rumors certainly had to have Rams fans nervous. But is McVay really retiring from the NFL?
Did Sean McVay retire?
McVay told ESPN, via Adam Schefter, on Friday that he will not pursue television opportunities and that he is committed on remaining Rams head coach.
Andrew Marchand of the New York Post reported that McVay was scheduled to meet with Amazon next week, and sources told him they “may have gone as high as five years and $100 million” on a contract offer.
Sean McVay’s age
McVay is 36-years old. He was hired by the Rams to be their head coach in 2017 at the age of 30.
What Sean McVay’s return means for the Rams
With McVay announcing his intent on helping the Rams defend their Super Bowl title, that firmly cements the team as the likely favorites in the NFC.
The Rams are going to have a majority of their roster returning for next season, such as quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Cooper Kupp and defensive lineman Aaron Donald. But they do have 19 players hitting free agency. Two huge names on that free agent list are linebacker Von Miller and wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., both of whom were in-season acquisitions. Yet, the Rams should be in good position with McVay remaining as the head coach.
The NFC was always a wide-open conference, especially in 2021. But the Rams look like more of a lock than their counterparts. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in search of a new starting quarterback with Tom Brady retiring. The Green Bay Packers are waiting on an answer from Aaron Rodgers on whether or not he will return to the team in 2022. Then there are the Dallas Cowboys, who look like the favorites to win the NFC East, but they are haunted by postseason failures.
McVay returning only increases the Rams’ odds of winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Now, networks will have to pivot to other options for their respective broadcasts.
