Nick Saban has hired Todd Grantham to be an analyst for the Alabama football program.

In recent weeks, Nick Saban has added the likes of Derek Dooley, Todd Grantham and Zach Mettenberger as analysts to his Alabama football coaching staff.

Matt Zenitz of On3 reported Grantham accepting a role on Saban’s staff Sunday afternoon. Grantham had most recently been Dan Mullen’s defensive coordinator at Florida and Mississippi State before that. This will be his fourth stop in the SEC since re-entering college football in 2010 with Mark Richt’s Georgia Bulldogs. Grantham had worked for Saban previously at Michigan State.

With Dooley being a former SEC head coach (Tennessee), Grantham being a former SEC defensive coordinator (Georgia, Mississippi State, Florida) and Mettenberger being a former SEC quarterback (Georgia, LSU), Saban has smartly added three different coaches with varying levels of experience.

Whether a coach wants to rehabilitate his image, or get started the profession, signing up to work for Saban is a huge step in the right direction.

While Grantham is the biggest name of the three currently given his time as a Power Five defensive coordinator for the last decade, it should be noted that all three men coming into the Alabama program have ample experience in the NFL.

Grantham spent the 2000s in the NFL, most notably as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator prior to linking up with Richt at Georgia. Dooley was Jason Garrett’s wide receivers coach in Dallas after getting let go at Tennessee. He was also Saban’s tight ends coach during his two-year run leading the Miami Dolphins having followed him from LSU to the NFL nearly two decades ago.

As for Mettenberger, he had a short playing career in the league as a backup quarterback, most notably with the Tennessee Titans. He most recently played for the Memphis Express in the defunct AAF in 2019. Mettenberger has since gotten into coaching in the Greater Nashville Area.

Even after a national title loss, Saban can pick and choose who he wants to join his coaching staff.
