Is LeBron James going to buy an NBA expansion team in Las Vegas?

Bill Simmons of The Ringer said he believes that LeBron James and the Fenway Sports Group will look to buy an expansion team in Las Vegas.

There has always been endless speculation as to whether the NBA would consider adding expansion teams to the league, with Seattle being brought up on numerous occasions.

The Ringer’s Bill Simmons revealed during his most recent “Bill Simmons Podcast” that he has received “intel” that the NBA is looking to add expansion teams with Seattle and Las Vegas. Simmons continued, saying that he heard Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and the Fenway Sports Group are worth keeping an eye on in Las Vegas.

Is LeBron James going to buy an NBA expansion team in Las Vegas?

An NBA spokesperson responded to the report, via Sam Gordon of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, saying “there is no truth” to it.

James getting into owning an NBA franchise is not exactly a shock. Last March that his goal was to own an NBA team after he officially retires.

The Fenway Sports Group owns a variety of professional sports teams, including the Boston Red Sox, Liverpool F.C. and most recently the Pittsburgh Penguins. James is a partner with the ownership group.

James is currently in his age 37 season, his fourth with the Lakers. This year, James is averaging 29.0 points, 7.9 rebounds and 6.3 assists while shooting 51.9 percent from the field through 43 games. The Lakers hold a 27-33 record and sit in ninth-place in the Western Conference as of Monday, Feb. 28.

Simmons put it out there that Fenway Sports Group was looking to own an NBA expansion team, but the league has since denied it.
