Patrick Mahomes could not believe what Ja Morant did on the hardwood Monday night.

It may be a tad premature, but Ja Morant’s coronation as the most exciting player in the NBA may be coming sooner than everyone realizes.

The Memphis Grizzlies‘ all-world point guard had a performance for the ages vs. the Southwest Division rival San Antonio Spurs on Monday night. Morant scored 52 points in a highlight-filled 34 minutes. Whether he was making deep 3’s, putting poor Jakob Poeltl on a poster or being on the receiving end of the greatest touchdown pass in Memphis history, all of Twitter took notice of it.

It was such a throughly captivating performance that it left Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes completely awestruck.

Memphis may be a small market team, but they have a superstar running the point there. Morant has the Grizzlies as a top-tier team in the Western Conference. Though he is only 22 years old, Morant has already become one of the game’s must-see superstars. It is not just his athleticism that is captivating all of social media, but his ability to completely take over a game in an instant.

Morant’s ascension to the Western Conference elites is fantastic for basketball. Memphis is an unquestioned basketball town and it finally has an unquestioned superstar to lead the city to the promised land. Of course, the Golden State Warriors and the Phoenix Suns loom large over in the Pacific Division. For now, Memphis is 100 percent ready to take that next big step as a franchise.

Ultimately, this was a quantum leap for Morant’s game on his rise to undeniable superstardom. Though he does not have to hang a 50 burger on Western Conference dreck night in and night out, Morant is now a player who can lead a long-suffering franchise with a rabid fanbase into untrodden territory. In a cross-sport comparison, that is exactly what Mahomes did in Kansas City.

Monday night will go down as a significant chapter in the growing legend that is The Book of Ja.
