Steelers have plenty of competition for free agent Mitchell Trubisky
Mitchell Trubisky could fare better in Pittsburgh than Chicago, but other NFL teams are interested in the Bills backup quarterback.
Without a successful succession plan for future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger, the Pittsburgh Steelers are desperate to find an adequate quarterback to take over in 2022. Even though the team already has Mason Rudolph and Dwayne Haskins, Steelers players like Najee Harris still expect the organization to pull a name in free agency.
Mitchell Trubisky is a reasonable acquisition, as the former first-round pick could thrive in a new environment. After Trubisky flunked out of Chicago, he spent the 2021 season under the tutelage of Josh Allen, who was ironically drafted the year after Trubisky.
Heading into the 2022 offseason, Trubisky has said that he “learned from Allen’s balance between being a pocket passer and an athlete on the edge, and learned from the same coaching staff that developed Allen into a star.”
Trubisky will likely be proving himself for a new team come fall, although it could be someone besides Pittsburgh. According to Jordan Schultz of The Game Day, the Steelers have been joined by the Washington Commanders and New Orleans Saints as teams showing interest in Trubisky.
Saints and Commanders competing with Steelers for Mitchell Trubisky
Although Trubisky is not the franchise quarterback the Bears hoped he would be, he could still develop into a decent bridge quarterback as franchises look for a Hall of Fame-caliber replacement. The Saints are still reeling from losing Drew Brees and Sean Payton, while the Commanders have their own misses in the last decade, from having Robert Griffin III flame out so quickly to the utter swing and miss that was Dwayne Haskins.
In case the Steelers miss on Trubisky, the team is expected by draft experts to take Malik Willis or Kenny Pickett in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft.
