2. G Brandon Scherff (Washington Commanders)

In each of the previous two offseasons, the NFL team now known as the Commanders Gave star guard Brandon Scherff the franchise tag. In 2020 (via Spotrac), he played for the one-year tender of $15.03 million and this past season it was the tender of $18.036 million. Now the seven-year veteran is on the verge of hitting the open market for the first time in his brief NFL career.

The fifth-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft started every game in each of his first two seasons in the league. But Scherff has managed that feat since. Still, he’s been named to the Pro Bowl five of the last six years and earned All-Pro honors in 2020 the year the team captured the NFC East.

Via Pro Football Focus (subscription required), the standout performer was tied for the 13th spot (with San Francisco’s Laken Tomlinson) in terms of guard rankings.

Speaking of the offensive line, four-year pro James Daniels could hit the open market unless the club gets him under contract before March 16. He’s been a starter at guard and center and his versatility is a huge plus for the Bears. Regardless, adding Scherff would be a major move.
