Count the New York Giants in as a potential team to sign Mitchell Trubisky in his free agency.

The New York Giants are a team that could be in the mix to sign Mitchell Trubisky in NFL free agency.

The former failed Chicago Bears starting quarterback spent last year backing up Josh Allen on the Buffalo Bills. With former Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and former Bills front office executive Joe Schoen taking over the Giants’ operation, the fit seems so obvious. Factor in Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline reporting of the Giants’ interest in him, and this could happen.

Pauline reported previously that the Pittsburgh Steelers have shown interest in adding Trubisky as well, but the Giants’ intrigue in him is very fascinating because of one Daniel Jones.

Mitchell Trubisky free agency rumors: Giants interested in adding veteran QB

Though the connection with Daboll and Schoen makes sense, keep in mind that they were only together for one season in Orchard Park. Not only that, but the Giants must free up some cap space to be in a position to sign him. New York finds itself slightly in the hole heading into the new league year. Trubisky may only be a high-end backup, but this is all about challenging Jones.

Since Daboll and Schoen did not draft Jones, they are not nearly as invested in him as the previous administration once was. So the idea would be to bring in Trubisky on a short-term deal and see him compete with Jones for the starting job. This will be Jones’ fourth year out of Duke, whereas Trubisky will be entering year six out of North Carolina. A Tobacco Road rivalry for an NFL job!

Though Daboll and Schoen will have some leeway with the tall task of rebuilding this team, they still have to win games. At the very least, Trubisky was able to do that in Chicago. He also knows the scheme in which Daboll wants to run. This is a manner to add competitiveness to the Giants without taping tennis balls to cornerbacks’ hands or making players run laps for punishment.

Judge Trubisky all you want, but he is slated to make more than his one-year deal with the Bills.
