Chocolatito Gonzalez controls Julio Cesar Martinez for dominant win

Roman Gonzalez, a.k.a Chocolatito, dominated the younger Julio Cesar Martinez for 12 rounds to earn the decision and hand Martinez his second loss. 

Roman Gonzalez, better known as Chocolatito, added to his legend by defeating highly-touted Julio Cesar Martinez for the unanimous decision win.

A lot of effort went into making Gonzalez vs. Martinez come to fruition.

Originally, Gonzalez was supposed to fight Juan Francisco Estrada in a March 5 trilogy bout, but COVID forced Estrada to pull out of the event. WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez took the assignment on short notice, and it showed.

Even though Martinez was stepping up to super flyweight to challenge WBC Diamond belt champion, Gonzalez, he still came in over a pound overweight. The fight went on after Martinez weighed less than an added 10 percent of the 115 pound limit on fight day, as reported by BoxingScene.com.

The weight issues played out during the fight.

Martinez (18-2, 14 KOs) had a solid round 1, but it was tough sledding for the rest of the night. Gonzalez picked up the tempo in round 2 and outworked Martinez over the next few rounds.

Martinez performed well in round 5 and looked like he might turn the tide in his favor, but the opposite happened.

In round 6, Gonzalez (51-3, 41 KOs) completely took over the fight. He threw every punch in his arsenal. Gonzalez beat Martinez up on the ropes down the stretch and sent a gassed Martinez back to his corner.

In-between rounds, Martinez said he was tired and complained about his hands. He routinely shook his hands throughout the second half of the fight and had difficulty keeping his hands up. That allowed Gonzalez to land cleanly to Martinez’s head.

Martinez never gave up, but things started to get scary. Gonzalez piled up the points, and Martinez’s body language showed fatigue. He swung for the fences in round 12, but Gonzalez’s accuracy and high energy level won him that round as well.

All three judges scored the contest for Gonzalez, who won via unanimous decision. It was clear to the fans at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, CA, that Gonzalez was the clear winner.

Even though Gonzalez lost to Estrada in his previous fight, many thought he deserved the win. The Nicaraguan boxing legend looked superb at 34 years old. Expect him to fight Estrada next, but Gonzalez’s continued resurgence could spell trouble for Estrada and the entire division.
