3 quarterbacks Steelers should chase after missing out on Aaron Rodgers
By Mark Powell
The Pittsburgh Steelers need to look elsewhere for a new starting quarterback after swinging and missing on Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.
So, where should they look?
The Steelers had been mentioned among many suitors for Rodgers, with Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk even going as far as to suggest Pittsburgh had spoken to Rodgers’ agents, and had a trade package at the ready should he decide he wanted to head to Steel City.
Obviously, that isn’t happening, but it doesn’t change the fact that the Steelers need a reliable replacement for Ben Roethlisberger.
The Steelers not trading three future first-round picks and more for a 38-year-old quarterback could end up being a blessing in disguise, as they’re more than just a QB away from Super Bowl contention.
With all that in mind, here are a few options for a team that should not go into the season with Mason Rudolph as their QB1.
Steelers rumors: In NFL Draft, take Malik Willis if he’s available
Willis is by no means a perfect quarterback prospect, but he arguably has the most potential out of any signal-caller in what’s been deemed an overall weak class.
No, the Steelers shouldn’t trade up for Willis, but if he’s available at pick No. 20, it makes all the sense in the world to select the Liberty product and groom him into a dangerous, mobile quarterback who can beat defenses with his arm and his legs.
Willis went on the record stating he doesn’t know how he’d fit into the Steelers offense, and that’s fair when you think about it. Matt Canada’s offense wasn’t all that impressive last season, mostly because of Roethlisberger’s inability to make plays on the move. All of that could change with Willis at the helm.
