Former UNC basketball star Tyler Hansbrough took a shot at Coach K over his farewell tour with Duke basketball this season.

That sound you hear in the background is Duke basketball fans getting their torches and pitchforks. The other murmur is UNC basketball fans laughing while preparing to defend Tyler Hansbrough at all costs.

Hansbrough opened himself to the ire of the Blue Devils (more than he would have already had) when he commented on Mike Krzyzewski’s farewell tour and the nature of his final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Tar Heels spoiled the party with a 94-81 victory. Then Hansbrough came back later with another hit.

“The only thing I can really compare it to, and I know I’ll take some heat for this, is Larry David,” Hansbrough said. “This season [on Curb Your Enthisiasm] they have a guy that goes to his funeral while he’s still alive so people can tell him how good he is. I thought it was one of those situations.”

Hansbrough isn’t wrong about the vibe of the farewell. By announcing his retirement ahead of time, Coach K turned the season into one long goodbye. It’s easy to see how it could be seen as self-congratulatory.

Then again, Coach K has been at Duke for 42 years, winning five national titles and more than 1,000 games. Most marriages don’t last that long. Most coaching tenures aren’t half as successful. If ever there was a coach who deserved to get patted on the back on his way out, it’s Krzyzewski. It’s not like he hoarded toilet paper or anything.

UNC got the last laugh by handing Duke a loss during such an important night for the program. The Tar Heels can leave it at that.
