Carlos Correa house: Former Astros star selling Houston home
By Mark Powell
Carlos Correa, arguably the top free agent on the market, sent a clear message to Houston Astros fans on Friday afternoon — he’s selling in house.
The timing is suspect to say the least, but Correa’s decision to sell his $1.6 million home just a day into the second round of free agency talks suggests he’s leaning towards signing a contract elsewhere.
The latest round of rumors placed the Chicago Cubs squarely among the favorites to land the prized shortstop, though they could be one of many. The Astros, due to their familiarity with Correa, cannot be eliminated until the 2017 World Series winner puts pen to paper.
For those unaware, Montrose is a neighborhood in west-central Houston.
MLB free agent rumors: Where will Carlos Correa sign?
Jon Morosi reported the Cubs interest this morning, stating “The Cubs were among the teams that had the heaviest dialogue with Correa’s camp in the hours before the lockout began in early December, and there is every reason to believe those conversations will resume.”
Chicago has the payroll flexibility to land a player of Correa’s stature. And while they may struggle in the immediate aftermath, Correa is just 27 years old. The Cubs window of contention is expected to open the season after next, but next offseason’s free agent class isn’t nearly as talented as this one.
So, why not add Correa now, especially when they have the low payroll to do so?
The Astros, meanwhile, have long prepared for the worst. After losing piece after piece from their 2017 World Series team, Correa was the heart and soul of a group that held on in spite of sign-stealing allegations (since proven) against them.
Correa will always be a fan favorite in the Houston area, even if he leaves. Perhaps he’s just moving across town! Consider me an optimist.
