Emmanuel Ogbah re-ups with the Dolphins: Signing grade
By John Buhler
The Miami Dolphins are bringing back pass-rusher Emmanuel Ogbah on a four-year contract.
Edge rusher Emmanuel Ogbah got the bag from the Miami Dolphins in his NFL free agency.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Ogbah and the Dolphins have agreed to a four-year deal worth $65 million. $32 million of that will be fully guaranteed at signing.
Ogbah has spent the last two NFL seasons with Miami. Despite the regime change, it is clear the front office values him as a pillar of the team’s defense. Half of his career 36 sacks have come in a Dolphins uniform with nine apiece in the last two seasons. With the 2022 campaign to be his age-29 season out of Oklahoma State, it serves Miami to lock up this pass-rusher through his prime.
Emmanuel Ogbah re-signs with Dolphins: Signing grade
There is a lot to like about this signing, as well as some reasons to be skeptical about it. Ogbah had his best seasons in the NFL playing for Brian Flores, who is now gone. While he showed great consistency in Dolphins uniform, keep in mind that Flores’ replacement in Mike McDaniel is an offensive-minded head coach. Clearly, this move is made with continuity in mind above all else.
It is smart for Miami to retain Ogbah to exhaust the better years of his prime. With the offense expected to elevate under McDaniel’s direction, Miami might be playing with more leads. If that is the case, Ogbah’s pass-rushing numbers will go up. By prioritizing bringing him back in-house, one would think the Dolphins know what they are doing here, as they paid a player for his production.
With the salary cap going up, this large number may not look as bad over the duration of the deal.
