Giants: Is Tyrod Taylor Daniel Jones’ eventual replacement?

The New York Giants may or may not have signed Daniel Jones’ eventual replacement.

The New York Giants realized just how important it was to have solid contingency plans in case Daniel Jones were to be sidelined with injury. The play of Mike Glennon and Jake Fromm late last season proved just that. New general manager Joe Schoen seemingly found a way to reinforce the quarterback position.

According to reports, the Giants agreed to terms on a two-year contract with former Houston Texans quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported that the deal is worth $11 million, but can reach $17 million in total money with incentives.

Given the contract that Taylor received, does this mean that he could eventually take the oft-injured Jones’ spot at the top of the quarterback depth chart?

Once Schoen and new head coach Brian Daboll were introduced by the Giants, they both expressed their belief in Jones, the 2019 sixth-overall pick by ex-general manager Dave Gettleman. Schoen said at the NFL Scouting Combine that Jones was the starter “right now,” but stressed the importance of bringing in a backup.

Schoen does have a relationship with Taylor, as he was hired in 2017 to be the assistant general manager for the Bills under Brandon Beane. The starting quarterback that year was Taylor, who played a role in Buffalo making the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

Jones is coming off of a neck injury that occurred in Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles on the first couple of plays called by then-interim offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens, who replaced Jason Garrett. While the Giants won that game 13-7, it was revealed that Jones was hurt and was eventually shut down for the remainder of the season. That was when the Giants fanbase was subjected to the brief Glennon-Fromm era in New York, one of which they would like to forget forever.

As for his recovery, Jones told the team’s website that there is no contact for him until August.

But the interesting thing is that Taylor is still the only quarterback between the two who will be under contract past this upcoming season. The team still has to make a decision as to whether they will pick up Jones’ fifth-year option.

Given it is a new regime, Jones’ future with the team is far from a lock. Could Giants fans see a quarterback battle between Jones and Taylor this summer? Possibly. If not, the team has a veteran backup with lengthy starter’s experience in case Jones is to go down with injury or ultimately benched.
