1. Potential March Madness upsets – East Region: No. 11 Virginia Tech vs. No. 6 Texas

Perhaps no bid thief was more stunning last week than Virginia Tech. After entering the ACC Tournament on the wrong side of the bubble, the Hokies knocked off Notre Dame, North Carolina and Duke as part of a four-day run to the title to secure the ACC’s automatic bid.

Predictive metrics have been high on Virginia Tech all year long but their overall performance was sloppy after slogging through a bad ACC during the regular season. It certainly looks like the Hokies are peaking now and they drew a very winnable matchup in the first round against Texas.

Chris Beard’s first year with the Longhorns hasn’t been stellar as a star-studded class of transfers never really gelled into a true national title contender. Texas also hasn’t done much away from home with their best victories away from the Erwin Center coming against TCU and Oklahoma.

There is a real sense of momentum building with Virginia Tech, which has a ton of talent and is finally living up to its potential. The Hokies are an 11-seed in name only and have an excellent chance to spring a big upset over Texas in the first round.
