While the Yankees seem to be losing steam in their pursuit of Freddie Freeman, an AL East rival could swoop in and scoop him up instead.

After the New York Yankees re-signed Anthony Rizzo, their pursuit of Freddie Freeman is over, but the AL East could still see the addition of the Braves All-Star with the rival Boston Red Sox in pursuit.

After the Braves traded for Oakland A’s first baseman Matt Olson, the Braves seemingly gave up trying to re-sign the face of the franchise. The Los Angeles Dodgers are believed to be the front-runner at this stage, but Jon Heyman says don’t rule out the Red Sox.

Freddie Freeman could cause AL East frenzy if he signs with Red Sox

The Red Sox are seemingly coming out of nowhere to get in the Freeman sweepstakes but may still have a long way to go to get the edge over the Dodgers considering Freeman is a California native.

With the Yankees bringing back Rizzo and the Blue Jays trading for Matt Chapman to add to their loaded lineup, the Red Sox need a counter move to compete in the AL East, especially considering Chris Sale will not be healthy for the start of the season.

If Freeman signs with the Red Sox, the Yankees will get a close look at the player they coveted for the next few years.

Then again, the Yankees may be more than happy to take a short-term investment on Rizzo than make the financial commitment needed to get Freeman.
