By Scott Rogust
The No. 15 Saint Peter’s Peacocks advanced to the Sweet 16 following their win over Murray State. But how far has a 15-seed gone in the NCAA Tournament?
The Saint Peter’s Peacocks entered the NCAA Tournament as the 15-seed, and the team based out of Jersey City, N.J. has become a team that many are cheering for. They did the nearly impossible, as they defeated the No. 2 Kentucky Wildcats in the opening round. If you thought their run would end in the Round of 32, you are mistaken.
On Saturday, the Peacocks beat the No. 7 Murray State Racers 70-60 to advance to the Sweet 16. Senior K.C. Ndefo scored 17 points (5-for-10 from field) and grabbed 10 rebounds, while junior Doug Edert recorded 13 points off the bench (4-for-6 from field).
With Saint Peter’s advancing, just how far has a 15-seed gone in the NCAA Tournament?
How far has a 15-seed gone in March Madness?
Saint Peter’s is the third 15-seed to reach the Sweet 16 since the tournament expanded in 1985, joining the 2013 Florida Gulf Coast Eagles and the 2021 Oral Roberts Golden Eagles. As far as 15-seeds have gone in March Madness, it has been the Sweet 16.
After defeating the Georgetown Hoyas and San Diego State Aztecs, Florida Gulf Coast was eliminated by the Florida in the third round of March Madness.
Oral Roberts last year pulled off upset wins over the Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida before they were ultimately sent home by the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Saint Peter’s will look to be the first 15-seed to reach the Elite Eight. To do so, they will have to defeat the winner of Saturday’s game between the No. 3 Purdue Boilermakers and No. 6 Texas Longhorns.
