The first F1 race of the 2022 season produced moments and memes worth tweeting about. What were the best reactions from the Bahrain GP?
Sunday’s Bahrain Grand Prix kicked off the F1 season with unexpected drama, thrilling overtakes and hilarious commentary.
Ferrari won the day. Charles Leclerc led for most of the race and left the little doubt of the outcome in the end. His teammate Carlos Sainz came through with a second-place finish.
Defending champion Max Verstappen and Red Bull had a disastrous outing, but more on that later.
For now, let’s look at how the race unfolded and what kind of entertainment Twitter supplied during it all:

McLaren went with an alternate strategy from the rest of the grid, putting Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo on medium tires to start the race. Whether it was tires or generally poor performance, the start of the race was not a fun time for the drivers or the McLaren fans.
Lando was right...🤕

Valterri Bottas had an exceptional qualifying but he will have wanted a much better start to the race.

Kevin Magnussen of Haas had a competitive start but he shot himself in the foot by going deep into Turn 1…twice.

Haas’s Mick Schumacher deserved shoutouts for his perfectly executed spin after Alpine’s Esteban Ocon clipped him.
Ocon got a five-second penalty for that one.
The highlight of the race and proof of concept for the new car design came courtesy of Leclerc and Verstappen as the Ferrari and Red Bull battled it out

The entire philosophy behind the schematic changes was to allow for closer pursuits and more overtaking. That box has been checked.
Verstappen locked up and lost his chance to keep the battle going. The frustration grew through his next pit stop.
Breaking: Max Verstappen is never ever EVER taking it easy on an outlap again.

Mercedes ended up finishing rather well but the performance of their power unit was under scrutiny.

During a lull in the race, fans were exactly thrilled with the timing screen on the broadcast.

Then it all went off.
Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri caught fire and prompted a safety car as Verstappen complained of steering issues. After the restart, disaster for Red Bull struck. Verstappen was passed by Sainz and had to retire his car with an issue. Sergio Perez still had a chance for third place but he also suffered engine problems and spun while trying to hold off Lewis Hamilton.
