Dolphins improve offensive line, sign Terron Armstead to five-year deal

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is going to be very happy knowing that the team brought in offensive tackle Terron Armstead.

In recent years, the Miami Dolphins have boasted one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. This past season, the Dolphins offensive line surrendered 235 total pressures, which is the most in the league, per Pro Football Focus. That certainly did not help quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has dealt with his fair share of injuries in his young NFL career.

But on Tuesday, Tagovailoa received some great news.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Dolphins have signed former New Orleans Saints left tackle Terron Armstead to a five-year, $75 million contract, which include incentives.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reports that the deal can go up to $87.5 million with said incentives, and $43.37 million of the deal is guaranteed.

Armstead spent the entirety of his career with the Saints, who selected him in the third-round out of Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He spent the majority of his time protecting the blindside of future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees.

In his nine year career, Armstead made it to the Pro Bowl three times.

If there is one area of concern for Armstead, it is that he has been injury prone. This past season, Armstead missed nine games due to elbow and knee injuries.

If Armstead remains healthy for the majority or entirety of the 2022 season, that will be a huge upgrade for Miami’s offense under new head coach Mike McDaniel, the former offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers. Not only that, but giving Tua Tagovailoa time in the pocket, something he has not had throughout his first two seasons in the NFL, will only help him become the franchise quarterback the organization believes he can be.
