Free agent safety Tyrann Mathieu seems to call out Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill on Twitter after news broke that Hill is seeking a trade.

It doesn’t take long for news to travel over Twitter, especially during free agency season. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport broke the news that Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill is seeking a trade, despite a generous offer from the Chiefs to make him one of the highest-paid wideouts in the NFL.

About 40 minutes later, former Chiefs free safety Tyrann Mathieu issued a cryptic tweet concerning controlling one’s ego.

Considering the proximity to the blockbuster Hill announcement and the fact that Hill was clearly dissatisfied with Kansas City’s offer, it’s hard to imagine that this tweet had nothing to do with Hill.

The question is whether the shot was at Hill for having an ego or at the Chiefs for letting perceived egos get in the way of putting together a Super Bowl-caliber roster?

Tyrann Mathieu sends a message on containing ego as Tyreek Hill seeks trade

While Mathieu does have control over his ego, he hasn’t had control over his own deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Before Super Bowl LVI, Mathieu said that he was “hoping” to re-sign with the Chiefs, but he doesn’t have “any control over that.” The Chiefs also said they’d like to keep Mathieu, but it appears they had yet to provide him an offer by March 8.

This year, Mathieu is coming off a three-year deal worth $42 million, which averaged out to about $14 million per year.

Although Mathieu has reiterated that he would like to play for the Chiefs, the Chiefs failed to franchise tag him by the deadline, and Mathieu has gone on to flirt with the possibility of joining his hometown team in New Orleans.

From Mathieu’s perspective, he may be seeing Kansas City prioritize Hill’s deal as they offer him a lucrative contract, one that apparently isn’t enough to appease Hill. It’s inevitably been a difficult offseason for him as he remains on the market as one of the top free agency signings, yet no team has come close to making a deal with him.

Mathieu has likely had to consider all sides and not take the lacking offers personally, hence the ego advice that is likely directed at Hill, who is willing to leave a championship roster in Kansas City for more money elsewhere.

If Mathieu returns to Chiefs, which is unlikely, he won’t be teammates with Hill who was traded to the Miami Dolphins.
