3 players Chiefs can draft to replace the void left by Tyreek Hill trade
1. Chris Olave
Olave likely represents the best possible receiver with any realistic chance of falling to them at No. 29. He’s not the nuclear athlete that Kansas City is losing with the Hill trade, but he is a master technician that can build outstanding rapport with Mahomes in Reid’s offensive system.
None of this means Olave isn’t a very good athlete. He shows good quickness and speed in the open field. That makes him a particularly valuable weapon on intermediate crossing routes and play-action shots over the top. Those happen to be throws that Mahomes makes at an especially high level.
In a perfect world, the Chiefs would sign an established No. 1 receiver in free agency that would ease Olave’s transition to life in the NFL. Olave has enough skill and refinement to contribute as a rookie even if he’s not afforded that luxury. His polish should appeal strongly to the Chiefs’ front office.
Kansas City might need to move up 10 or so slots on Draft Day to really feel good about their chances of nabbing the former Ohio State star. Waiting for him to fall to No. 29 might be too large a risk for the Chiefs. He’s a perfect fit for the intricate route-tree Reid demands from his wide receivers.
