Tyreek Hill trade details: Chiefs deal star wideout to Dolphins in blockbuster

The Kansas City Chiefs have traded star wide receiver Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for a package of five draft picks.

Well, the Chiefs have plenty of draft capital now. Will it make up for losing a player of Hill’s caliber?

The Chiefs didn’t want to make Hill the highest-paid wide receiver in football, which was surely his demand after seeing the contract Davante Adams received upon his trade to Kansas City’s division rival — the Las Vegas Raiders.

So, with things at an impasse, the Chiefs made Hill available. With the finalists being the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, the former eventually won out.

Tyreek Hill contract

Upon being traded to the Dolphins, Miami has signed Hill to a new contract, making him the highest-paid wide receiver in all of football. Hill’s deal is for four years and $120 million, per Adam Schefter. The contract includes over $72 million in guaranteed money.

Tyreek Hill trade grade

For the Chiefs, there was no winning this trade. Kansas City punted on Patrick Mahomes’ best weapon, all for draft picks. Were Mahomes not in his prime, perhaps it would make a bit more sense. But bad contracts on the defensive side of the ball — namely Frank Clark — but Brett Veach in a no-win situation. Perhaps his hubris got the best of him.

Chiefs: C (and that’s being generous)

From the Dolphins point of view, this could be a very savvy move. Miami is building around Tua Tagovailoa, and it provides them with a solid core of weapons at the wide receiver position, including Hill and Jaylen Waddle. Losing draft picks is tough for a team with so many holes, but adding an All-Pro is never a bad thing.
